A Love Letter for the Full Sturgeon Moon + Lunar Eclipse

Hello, Moon Lover.

Some Full Moons illuminate what has been quietly waiting for us to see, and some eclipses pull us closer to the mystery, reminding us that transformation is happening even when we cannot yet see the whole story.

Tonight, we receive both.

Here in Sonoma County, La Luna rises at approximately 7:39pm PT, already moving through a powerful partial lunar eclipse. By 9:12pm, the eclipse reaches its maximum, with nearly all of the Moon slipping into Earth’s darkest shadow, and just six minutes later, at approximately 9:18pm, the Moon reaches her fullest expression in Pisces. The partial eclipse continues until 10:51pm, with the final traces of Earth’s shadow leaving La Luna around 12:01am.

So if the skies cooperate tonight, look toward the east as darkness settles in. We may see La Luna emerge from the horizon already transformed, eventually taking on that otherworldly coppery-red glow that happens when Earth’s shadow falls across her face. And somewhere beneath that same Moon, I imagine so many of us looking up together. (Cue Fievel singing Somewhere Out There from An American Tail…)

The word that has been circling me for this Moon is surrender.

S-U-R-R-E-N-D-E-R

Surrender has become such an interesting word for me because I once understood it mostly through the language of release, while these days I experience it much more as an invitation into trust. Surrender softens our hands around the outcome while keeping us deeply devoted to what is ours to tend, creating space for life to surprise us and for possibilities we may never have imagined. We give others the freedom to walk their own paths, allow answers to reveal themselves in their own timing, welcome dreams as they change shape, and open ourselves to receiving what wants to find us. And perhaps most beautifully, we learn to let the mystery remain mysterious.

Pisces knows something about this. As the final sign of the zodiac, she carries the wisdom of water… the intuitive knowing that there are moments for movement and moments for stillness, currents we choose and currents that carry us somewhere we never imagined going. Water doesn’t lose its essence when it changes form; it simply meets what is here and continues becoming.

Tonight’s Pisces eclipse feels like an invitation into that same sacred fluidity: trust ourselves enough to meet life as it unfolds.

And when I look back over this month, I realize surrender has quietly been the golden thread running through so much of what I have been living and writing.

At Lion’s Gate, I found myself thinking about presence and the sacredness of inhabiting the life that is already here. When I wrote my anniversary love letter to Zuli, I found myself marveling at everything that had arrived because I followed the red threads and left room for wonder. My birthday brought reflection on another trip around the Sun and what it means to love deeply while loosening my grip around outcomes so I can tend what is actually mine to tend. And then this week, life carried me back without going backward, reminding me that our past can become sacred ground when we gather its wisdom and choose, sovereignly, what we carry forward.

Different stories. Same golden thread.

Presence. Trust. Open hands. Sovereignty. Surrender.

Perhaps surrender is one of the deepest ways we can participate in our lives, becoming even more present to what is here and rooted in what we know to be ours to tend. We honor others by allowing them what is theirs, trust ourselves to meet what unfolds, and leave a little sacred space for God, the Divine, our ancestors, La Luna, and the beautiful intelligence of life itself to tend the rest.

That is the surrender I am carrying beneath the Moon tonight.

Those of you who have been here a while know how much I love soaking my baubles, crystals, and water in moonbeams, but tonight I’m giving La Luna and my treasures a little space. Traditions around eclipses vary, and while some intentionally create eclipse water or charge sacred objects beneath them, this Moon feels like an invitation for me to simply be with her, receiving rather than preserving the experience. My crystals will sit beside me, and when my ritual is complete, I’ll return the water I use to the Earth with gratitude.

If eclipse water is calling to you, follow that nudge. Set your water beneath La Luna with a clear intention, perhaps asking it to hold the energy of transformation, surrender, intuition, or trust, and save it for a future ritual when you feel called to work with that medicine.

As for me, tonight I’ll stand beneath Her with open hands and allow whatever wisdom is meant for me to find its way home.

Two Ways to Meet La Luna Tonight

Choose whichever ritual feels like yours. As I wrote beneath last month’s Full Moon, sacred practice has become simpler for me with time. Our rituals become powerful because we bring ourselves to them.

1: The Open Hands Ritual

Bring a bowl of water, moonstone, aquamarine, or labradorite, your journal, and a little lavender or frankincense. Place the bowl where it can reflect the night sky, anoint your wrists or heart with (properly diluted) essential oil, and sit beneath La Luna with your palms resting open on your lap.

Let the water become your teacher for a few moments. Notice its willingness to receive, reflect, and move. Then ask yourself quietly:

What is mine to lovingly tend, and what am I ready to entrust to something greater than myself?

When you are ready, dip your fingertips into the water and touch them to your heart, blessing yourself with the intention to move forward with open hands.

Then take your bowl of water into the garden. Find a plant, tree, or patch of Earth that has held beauty for you this season and slowly return the water to the soil. You might gather a few spent blossoms or fallen leaves along the way and add them to your compost, noticing how naturally the Earth receives what has completed its season and transforms it into nourishment for what comes next.

As you pour the water onto the Earth, offer this blessing:

Mother Earth, receive what has completed its season.

La Luna, illuminate what is ready to transform.

May I trust the wisdom of timing, the sacredness of change, and the life already stirring within the unknown.

May everything I lovingly return become nourishment for what comes next.

And so it is.

2: The Sacred Unknown Ritual

For this one, bring amethyst, a candle, your journal, and jasmine or lavender. Light your candle, hold the amethyst at your heart, and write one question you have been carrying… something whose answer has felt especially important.

Then, instead of answering it, fold the paper.

Place it beneath your crystal.

Sit beneath the Moon and practice being with the question.

Let curiosity soften the urgency for answers, and let possibility open the door beyond certainty, creating space to rest in the sacred unknown and trust what has yet to reveal itself.

Close by whispering:

I trust the wisdom within me. I trust what is revealing itself. I trust what is mine to tend. I trust the mystery to tend the rest.

Three Women to Sit Beside Tonight

If you enjoy choosing a goddess, mystic, or feminine archetype to explore during a lunar cycle, three women feel especially beautiful for this Moon.

  1. Quan Yin | China and East Asia | Buddhist tradition Quan Yin, also known as Guanyin, is the beloved bodhisattva of compassion in East Asian Buddhism, with roots in the Indian Buddhist figure Avalokiteshvara. Over centuries, she came to be widely represented in China in feminine form and became associated with mercy, compassion, and hearing the cries of those who suffer. Her medicine for this Moon is the surrender that comes through a softened heart, reminding us that tenderness can coexist with tremendous strength. She invites us to meet ourselves and others with compassion while trusting that love does not need to control the path another soul chooses.

  2. Inanna | Ancient Sumer, present-day Iraq | Mesopotamian religion Inanna is one of the great goddesses of ancient Sumer, associated with love, fertility, power, sexuality and war. Her famous descent into the Underworld feels especially resonant beneath an eclipse. As she passes through seven gates, she relinquishes a piece of her royal adornment at each one until she enters the depths stripped of the symbols of her worldly power. Her story carries the wisdom of descent, surrender and eventual return, reminding us that there are seasons when transformation asks us to enter the unknown and trust that what is essential within us will remain.

  3. Mother Mary | Ancient Judea, present-day Israel and Palestinian territories | Christian tradition Mary, the Jewish mother of Jesus who became one of Christianity’s most beloved sacred figures, embodies a deeply devotional form of surrender. Her story begins with a courageous yes to a future she could not possibly have understood in its fullness. Across Catholic and Orthodox traditions in particular, Mary has become an enduring symbol of faith, maternal love, compassion and devotion. For this Pisces Moon, I am drawn to the quiet strength within her willingness to trust the sacred unfolding of her life, one faithful step at a time.

Choose the woman who whispers to you, pour yourself something delicious, and spend a little time with her story tonight. Perhaps notice which expression of surrender your soul is craving right now: Quan Yin’s compassionate softness, Inanna’s courageous descent into transformation, or Mary’s devotional trust in the sacred unknown.

Beneath the Moon

And if your ritual tonight is simply sitting outside with a journal while La Luna moves through Earth’s shadow, that is sacred too. Perhaps begin here:

  1. Where in my life would surrender create more spaciousness, possibility, or peace?

  2. What is truly mine to tend in this season… and what am I ready to place into the hands of the Divine?

  3. Where is life inviting me to trust what is unfolding before I know how the story ends?

Tonight, as Earth’s shadow moves across La Luna, I keep thinking about how beautifully the Moon demonstrates something we so easily forget: being temporarily hidden does not diminish our wholeness.

She remains whole beneath the shadow. And so do we.

May this Full Sturgeon Moon bless the places within you that are learning to trust.

May her waters soften your hands around whatever you have been holding too tightly.

May you recognize the golden threads already weaving their way through your life, and may you feel deeply supported as you tend what is yours and entrust the rest to the sacred unknown.

I’ll meet you beneath Her tonight.

Open hands… Open heart… and a little room left for wonder.

Wrapping you in moonbeams,
